Coronavirus: Evolution vs ID

Another deadly virus is just around the corner: coronavirus, as predicted by evolution…

Since it was predicted, what had been done to prevent it?

We have all sorts of experts visiting TSZ, such as immunologists, population geneticists, biochemists, and the like…

What have they done in this field?  How about ID?

What are you doing personally to protect yourself, and your family,  from another possible epidemic?

I have lived through SARS, wearing full protective gear for many days. My wife was doing initial screening at the hospital entrance, while few months pregnant…

Is same, or worse, yet to come?

  1. Nonlin.org,

Here’s the thing Nonlin, you can like that guy’s policies (if he even has any) , but for all Americans, if you are being honest, no one can be happy about the fact that in such a short amount of time, he has made America a laughingstock in the rest of the world. Who are America’s allies now? Its not just that all the other world leaders think he is a buffoon, but the citizens of other countries as well, they can’t understand how the US could consider this guy to be the most qualified to run the country. They are baffled. What country looks at America and says, those guys are smart?

There is no way a serious person can say that Obama is not much much smarter than him. Obama didn’t embarrass the US in the eyes of the rest of the world. You can’t possibly believe that Trump is a smart human. He has transparently thin skin, he doesn’t read, he was a poor businessman who bankrupted virtually every company he started, he has selected his cabinet based on nothing other than being patsies for him. He even eats food like a little kid. His doctor has to hide vegetables in his mashed potatoes, because otherwise he would never eat anything healthy.

The damage he has done to the prestige and honor of the office of the President will take a century to overcome. I can imagine there are all kinds of people who would have never in a million years thought about being President, but now that he has become President, I believe almost no one thinks there lack of distinguished experience would prevent them. Rock thinks he could be President now. Probably Paris Hilton think she could run if she wanted to. Any of the Kardashians now probably believe they would have a chance. And amazingly they are probably right, because being President requires nothing anymore. Why would you need to be smart? Why would you need to understand complicated world affairs? Why would you need to be tactful, or diplomatic, or even have morality of ANY kind? Can a sex tape prevent you from being President now? Of course not. How about a neck tattoo? I doubt it would matter anymore. A racist? Obviously no problem? A drunk? I don’t see why not.

Who now is unqualified to be President? That list now is very very small. That is shameful for supposedly one of the most developed nations in the world.

  2. Nonlin.org: They “explain” a lot and predict nothing.

This is what I refer to in the OP…
Evolution predicts nothing and explains little or nothing…

LTEE by Lenski is still called the longest running evolution experiment, or One of The Biggest Evolution Experiments Ever, but it wasn’t really designed to prove evolution…
Who’s is funding it? Church of Atheist? 🤗

  3. phoodoo: Who are America’s allies now?

Don’t you mean leaches instead of “allies”?

phoodoo: Its not just that all the other world leaders think he is a buffoon, but the citizens of other countries as well, they can’t understand how the US could consider this guy to be the most qualified to run the country. See, that’s the difference between someone that DID something with his life and leaches that did nothing but suck the people’s blood. Witness the Trump empire vs the nonexistent creations of merkel-nazi, micron, banana, etc-nobodies. Of all 2020 candidates, Bloomberg is the the only one that has built something, but he has a crappy personality and will get nowhere with the stupids. We need people that have done something with their lives, not leeches. If you’re a leftie, where is Bezos, Gates, Zuckerberg, and even Soros, etc. etc? Why don’t they run and win like Trump instead of just pulling the strings of cretin and corrupt puppets like Banana, the Crooked, senile Biden and so on?

phoodoo: Rock thinks he could be President now. Probably Paris Hilton think she could run if she wanted to. Any of the Kardashians now probably believe they would have a chance.

Exactly!!! All these people and those LIKE THEM deserve a thousand times more than Banana to be president. They have DONE something with their lives! On what planet do you live? Are you a US citizen? If so, you’re extremely brainwashed. Sadly, probably lost for ever.

Alan Fox: What about an atheist?

Been there, done that. Sadly. Look at what they did, not what they said.

phoodoo: There is no way a serious person can say that Obama is not much much smarter than him.

Banana is NOT smart. He’s an iyi per Nassim Taleb. Educate yourself. He doubled the US debt (in 8 yrs?!? WTF?) , had poor economic performance out of a recession when a blind and imbecile monkey would have done better, fucked up Ukraine, Libya, Syria, etc. let the US military degrade, corrupted the intelligence services and the judiciary, encouraged racism, and destroyed the family to name just a few. And let’s not forget, he tried to steal the 2016 elections for which he should be rotting in jail.

  4. J-Mac: LTEE by Lenski is still called the longest running evolution experiment, or One of The Biggest Evolution Experiments Ever, but it wasn’t really designed to prove evolution…

I may be wrong, but thought LTEE was designed to prove evolution. Like Miller–Urey and more. But actually failed to do so. So the spin doctors took over.

  5. Nonlin.org: I may be wrong, but thought LTEE was designed to prove evolution. Like Miller–Urey and more. But actually failed to do so. So the spin doctors took over.

    Of course!
Lenski and others were so certain this was going prove evolution and shut everyone up, especially ID. After few thousand generations, Lenski was already making over-inflated evolutionary claims…
It’s only recently, but especially when Behe exposed that Darwin Devolves, Lenski toned it down and excuses appeared…

    Is the LTEE breaking bad?

But he still remains optimistic for the next 31 years and hasn’t correct his LTEE (long term evolution experiment) to long term devolution experiment or, LTEE (long term evolution equivocation).

  6. Nonlin.org: See, that’s the difference between someone that DID something with his life and leaches that did nothing but suck the people’s blood.

Yea did a lot, six times filed for bankruptcy, Trump Foundation, Trump University, stiffing contractors, who doesn’t leach off people again?

Witness the Trump empire vs the nonexistent creations of merkel-nazi, micron, banana, etc-nobodies.

Right, the empire than would be a net loser without subsidized debt and and a huge inheritance. An empire created by an adulterous con man openly fleecing the rubes whose lives either require grievances for meaning or willingness to sell their beliefs for a couple of dollars.

Of all 2020 candidates, Bloomberg is the the only one that has built something, but he has a crappy personality and will get nowhere with the stupids.

True , Trump has the stupids demographic locked up, spice with a few white nationalists, some racists ,misogynists, conspiracy lovers, and evangelicals willing the worship the Golden Calf.

We need people that have done something with their lives, not leeches. If you’re a leftie, where is Bezos, Gates, Zuckerberg, and even Soros, etc. etc?

Maybe lefties are not complete morons, in constant need for validation by adoring crowds, acting like a cut rate Mussolini.

Why don’t they run and win like Trump instead of just pulling the strings of cretin and corrupt puppets like Banana, the Crooked, senile Biden and so on?

You don’t think people are pulling the strings on Trump, where do you think Trump got the money to fund this wonderful empire when no US bank would loan him money? Enjoy the Kool Aid.

  7. Nonlin.org: Banana is NOT smart. He’s an iyi per Nassim Taleb. Educate yourself. He doubled the US debt (in 8 yrs?!? Projection is strong with this one.

  8. Nonlin.org: I may be wrong, but thought LTEE was designed to prove evolution.

    No, to investigate evolution.

    Like Miller–Urey and more.

Wrong again. Miller-Urey was looking at prebiotic organic synthesis. The failure to understand the distinction between origins and evolution is endemic among critics.

  9. Allan Miller: No, to investigate evolution.

Embarrassment and in the works for another 31 years…
    But the hopes were high:

Long-Term Experimental Evolution in Escherichia coli. I. Adaptation and Divergence During 2,000 Generations

Richard E. Lenski, Michael R. Rose, Suzanne C. Simpson and Scott C. Tadler

But the hopes got downgraded…later on…😂

  10. J-Mac: Embarrassment and in the works for another 31 years…

How is the long term experiment in Design going, any new designs detected?

  11. Nonlin.org: Don’t you mean leaches instead of “allies”?

And let’s not forget, he tried to steal the 2016 elections for which he should be rotting in jail.

No, you don’t actually believe all this stuff you wrote, come on. You don’t actually think Obama tried to steal any election, and you don’t think he obliterated the military, and you don’t really think Obama has done worse for the deficit and the economy than Trump. You know full well Trump is not a good businessman. You don’t believe Trump has a good education and understands the world. You also don’t actually believe that it is a good thing that America has lost ALL its allies in three short years. You don’t believe what you are saying. I don’t believe what you are saying. No one does.

We are talking about what is actually good for the country and its people. America is not is good shape right now, You can’t possibly be so radical in your thoughts to believe what you are writing. Its just rhetoric, who knows why. Because people think their taxes will be low enough? Because they hate foreign people so just chant, “build the wall, build the wall…”

Its sort of like when you see these people who wrote all this vitriolic things about some fat celebrity online, calling them every name they can think of, and then when some media tracks down that person to ask why they would write that, and it turns out they themselves are fat or insecure or something, so they write this nonsense hate stuff, because they just need the therapy of doing that.

Its not real. What you are saying is not real, and you know that. Its not how you actually live your life, and how you want to teach your kids. I don’t believe that.

  12. Nonlin.org,

This is what Trump said today:

“We’re order a lot of supplies,” Trump told reporters on Friday. “We’re ordering a lot of, uh, elements that, frankly, we wouldn’t be ordering unless it was something like this. But we’re ordering a lot of different elements of medical.

Don’t try to tell me, when he says this, you think these are the words of a smart person. Don’t pretend that you think this is a person who should be in charge in a time of a crisis. I can sort of understand if you would say, you don’t care that he is dumb, because you just want conservative justices to fulfill some kind of religious agenda, but to say you believe he is good, he is smart. Are you really willing to sell your soul to be so dishonest about that? Come on man, Be real.

  13. J-Mac,

Embarrassment and in the works for another 31 years…
    But the hopes were high:

The experiment was to investigate evolutionary behaviour over many generations, with the capacity to ‘roll back the tape’ when something interesting happened. It succeeded, and numerous papers of original research were published – more in that one experiment than several years’-worth of Bio-complexity. Some dumbasses seem to think that ‘success’ would only be achieved if some monster evolved, with Lenski beating it back with a stick!

  14. Allan Miller,

Politics in England seem a bit hard to understand from an outside perspective. I can never tell who is in charge.

    American politics are embarrassingly obvious.

  15. J-Mac: It’s only recently, but especially when Behe exposed that Darwin Devolves, Lenski toned it down and excuses appeared…

It’s clear you’ve not actually read what you then link to.

Out of interest, is there a similar experiment that demonstrates Intelligent Design in action? Or is critiquing the people who actually do actual work the best ID has to offer?

  16. phoodoo: Are you really willing to sell your soul to be so dishonest about that? Come on man, Be real.

You personally are willing to do exactly that, but science takes the place of politics.

You know that Uri Geller is not psychic. You know that your ‘critiques’ of the very concept of fitness are themselves absurd, but it’s all to serve the cause. Just like many people know that Trump is a moron but he suits their purposes. You know that Intelligent Design is a sham but it serves whatever purpose you have.

So your criticisms of Trump fans exactly apply to you with regard to evolution and Intelligent Design. You are on the ID team for the same reasons some people are on team Trump. Not because they are believers, but but because it serves their purposes.

So that obvious disdain you have for the Trumpers, well, I got news for you…

  17. J-Mac: Lenski and others were so certain this was going prove evolution and shut everyone up,

Do you have proof that this was the purpose of the experiment?

I.E. are you lying for Jesus?

  18. phoodoo:
    Allan Miller,

Politics in England seem a bit hard to understand from an outside perspective.I can never tell who is in charge.

    American politics are embarrassingly obvious.

Nominally, it’s the PM, though Parliament has ultimate ‘sovereignty’. It’s a bit academic though; the PM is the leader of the biggest party, which also inevitably dominates Parliament. He won a ‘landslide’ with 43% of the vote.

What’s really in charge at the moment is Brexit. That’s likely to unravel soon, and we’ll look West for an orange saviour, God help us.

  19. OMagain: You personally are willing to do exactly that, but science takes the place of politics.

I was wondering why I was reluctant to give unbridled credit to phoodoo for his forthright condemnation of non-lin’s repugnant comment.

  20. OMagain,

No, your whole concept is wrong. I didn’t first have a belief and then found evidence to reinforce it. Exactly the opposite. I read Dawkins, and Neil Shubin and people like this, and started thinking, wait a second THIS is the foundations of belief in evolution? This is what you have? I was just like everyone else, just figured if you studied the science long enough, it would make sense. So I studied it. But not like a fake skeptic studies things, like a real person who actually questions things. So I slowly realized, ‘survival of the fittest”, that’s a concept of change? The eye evolved by fortunate accidents that fortuitously provided incremental reproductive benefits? And the proof for this is, there isn’t any? Just accept it???

So sorry to disappoint you, you have it totally backwards. You on the other hand, do indeed seem to have this God-fear complex. You don’t see me always talking about religion here-that is your baggage not mine.

  21. phoodoo,

… like a real person who actually questions things.

You are pretty much describing every scientist.

  22. Allan Miller:
    phoodoo,

You are pretty much describing every scientist.

No I don’t think that is true. Being a doubter, being a contrarian is usually not a good career move in science academia. There are a few who have been able to get away with it, and still survive, but they are much more the exception that the rule. Challenging the consensus gets one labeled a troublemaker, not a career advancer.

  23. phoodoo: Challenging the consensus gets one labeled a troublemaker, not a career advancer.

Unfortunately pure research seems to have come under closer scrutiny from funding bodies. If you are paying, you expect results. Better to look under the streetlight than take a shot in the dark.

Anyway I put up a thread so you can tell us how Intelligent Design theory explains scientific phenomena. I look forward to responses from troublemakers and those unable to advance their careers to offer alternatives to mainstream science.

  24. phoodoo: I read Dawkins, and Neil Shubin and people like this, and started thinking, wait a second THIS is the foundations of belief in evolution?

Evolution is a fact. A fact that needs to be explained. You don’t need to believe in it, it’s just a brute fact. The people who dispute that evolution happens are outside of the mainstream and do not actually contribute to science per se. They piss around on blogs whining and moaning but not actually moving the needle a jot.

phoodoo: The eye evolved by fortunate accidents that fortuitously provided incremental reproductive benefits? And the proof for this is, there isn’t any? Just accept it???

You mean how we’re supposed to accept your claim that the FBI uses physics all the time? Like that?

phoodoo: So I studied it. But not like a fake skeptic studies things, like a real person who actually questions things.

The same way you studied Uri Geller and came to the conclusion he’s a real psychic?

It seems to me we can come to a general conclusion about the worth of your conclusions in the general sense.

GIven that Uri Geller has himself admitted he is not psychic and that you continue to insist that he is, what value should we then place on the quality of your ‘research’ in general? Not much I’d say.

And it seems the world agrees with me. Insofar as pubmed search for ‘phoodoo’ returns no papers.

phoodoo: So sorry to disappoint you, you have it totally backwards. You on the other hand, do indeed seem to have this God-fear complex.

Do I? Why would I be afraid of what does not exist? If there was evidence for a god, I’d consider it. If there was evidence for the mechanism of evolution I’d consider it.

It’s amusing how you tell yourself that the only reason people deny ID is because they are afraid they will then have to answer to god.

But that’s nonsensical from the very start. If I became convinced that god existed via ‘the complexity of codes in DNA’ or somesuch I’d still have literally no idea how to act in order to assuage my fear of ‘god’. Should I not eat fish on a friday? Should I behead the infidels?

Should I advocate that people who have sex outside marriage deserve cancer as a reward, as J-Mac advocates?

So the reasoning that I deny the facts because I don’t want to answer to ‘god’ falls at the first hurdle. I don’t know what your god wants so how can I be afraid of not doing what it wants?

That is just something you tell yourself to avoid confronting the fact that your critiques are poor quality and that is why they are failing, rather you tell yourself that no matter what you said they’d reject it anyway because of the ‘god fear’.

So the only person you are convincing here is yourself, and I suspect you are not even doing a great job of that.

  25. phoodoo: You don’t see me always talking about religion here-that is your baggage not mine.

I mostly talk about ID. That you believe that is religion, well, that’s telling.

  26. phoodoo: No I don’t think that is true.Being a doubter, being a contrarian is usually not a good career move in science academia. There are a few who have been able to get away with it, and still survive, but they are much more the exception that the rule.Challenging the consensus gets one labeled a troublemaker, not a career advancer.

You could not be more wrong. Science would not advance if people just regurgitated the consensus. That’s what I’m doing in my ‘sex’ thread, for example. But you have to know why there’s a consensus.

  27. OMagain: If I became convinced that god existed via ‘the complexity of codes in DNA’ or somesuch I’d still have literally no idea how to act in order to assuage my fear of ‘god’. Should I not eat fish on a friday? Should I behead the infidels?

This disconnection between a claimed “miracle” (be it an eye, a resurrection or a flagellum) and the derivation of some wholesale moral authority of a supreme being or supreme beings is a flight of imagination that baffles me too.

  28. Alan Fox: This disconnection between a claimed “miracle” (be it an eye, a resurrection or a flagellum) and the derivation of some wholesale moral authority of a supreme being or supreme beings is a flight of imagination that baffles me too.

It’s something that phoodoo will never ever address, the draw of ‘it’s not that my explanations are bad, it’s that they refuse to admit they are good because of their fear of god’ is too powerful to drop.

If they realize they are not convincing us because of the science rather then the metaphysics then, well, all is lost for them. It’s why the lack of actual science in ID does not matter so much, it’s not the science we are rejecting.

  29. phoodoo: Challenging the consensus gets one labeled a troublemaker, not a career advancer.

Wrong. Challenging the consensus gets one attention. The moron/genius distinction depends on the data. This is where ID fails.

  30. Allan Miller: … if people just regurgitated the consensus. That’s what I’m doing in my ‘sex’ thread, for example.

Urgh. That could have been expressed better!

  31. OMagain:

Out of interest, is there a similar experiment that demonstrates Intelligent Design in action?

I think it is called TSZ, and results so far are mixed…

  32. Allan Miller: Same over here. Johnson is an incompetent, lazy buffoon, nation’s a laughing stock, but he won by a landslide.

Either that, or you’re not understanding a whole lot. To be fair, Johnson is more of a Micron than a Trump.

newton: Yea did a lot, six times filed for bankruptcy, Trump Foundation, Trump University, stiffing contractors, who doesn’t leach off people again?

There’s two sure ways to not go bankrupt: 1. to not risk anything; 2. to live of the government tit. Contractors can and do defend themselves – none of your business. And no one beats the Clinton foundation corruption. Maybe the Bidens ant the Bananas. But not really.

newton: Right, the empire than would be a net loser without subsidized debt and and a huge inheritance.

Can you do it if so easy? No chance.

newton: True , Trump has the stupids demographic locked up, spice with a few white nationalists, some racists ,misogynists, conspiracy lovers, and evangelicals willing the worship the Golden Calf.

    This statement is just dumb.

newton: You don’t think people are pulling the strings on Trump, where do you think Trump got the money to fund this wonderful empire when no US bank would loan him money?

This is again too dumb. The guy was NOT a politician. Pulling the strings ONLY applies to lifelong politicians.

newton: Trump has the stupids demographic locked up

Not Trump, but yes, someone “has the stupids demographic locked up”. No worries, the Whites and the Browns are waking up to the commie con job.

  33. newton: Projection is strong with this one.

Deep down you know it to be true.

phoodoo: You don’t actually think Obama tried to steal any election, and you don’t think he obliterated the military, and you don’t really think Obama has done worse for the deficit and the economy than Trump.

On what planet do you live?!? Just out of curiosity, exactly what fake news outlets are brainwashing you?

phoodoo: You can’t possibly be so radical in your thoughts to believe what you are writing. Its just rhetoric, who knows why. Because people think their taxes will be low enough? Because they hate foreign people so just chant, “build the wall, build the wall…”

Not radical at all. Not about “taxes”. The guy is married to a foreigner for God’s sake. And was married to another one before. Not about “the wall” either.

phoodoo: Its sort of like when you see these people who wrote all this vitriolic things about some fat celebrity online, calling them every name they can think of, and then when some media tracks down that person to ask why they would write that, and it turns out they themselves are fat or insecure or something, so they write this nonsense hate stuff, because they just need the therapy of doing that.

    Huh? What’s this nonsense?

phoodoo: Its not real. What you are saying is not real, and you know that. Its not how you actually live your life, and how you want to teach your kids. I don’t believe that.

You live the Truman show. Wake up, Truman!

phoodoo: Don’t try to tell me, when he says this, you think these are the words of a smart person.

Not his best, granted. So what? Are you at your peak every single second of your life? Overall, the guy is OUTSTANDINGLY articulate… and funny. And still, many (most?) voted him for substance, not for the good show.

phoodoo: I can sort of understand if you would say, you don’t care that he is dumb

You’re serious?!? Whoever thinks Trump is dumb, he is the dumbest of them all. Wow!

phoodoo: Are you really willing to sell your soul to be so dishonest about that?

Really? “Sell your soul”?!? “Dishonest”?!? I would NOT accuse you of that for supporting Banana, the Crooked or even Crazy Bernie.

  34. Allan Miller: What’s really in charge at the moment is Brexit. That’s likely to unravel soon, and we’ll look West for an orange saviour, God help us.

Either that, or the EU goes the way of the USSR. It could also be that a bit of competition invigorates everyone.

Alan Fox: I was wondering why I was reluctant to give unbridled credit to phoodoo for his forthright condemnation of non-lin’s repugnant comment.

And what exactly is “repugnant”? I for one do not think you or anyone else disagreeing with me is “repugnant”.

  35. Nonlin.org: I for one do not think you or anyone else disagreeing with me is “repugnant”.

Specifically, referring to Barack Obama as “banana”. It’s repugnant and arguably racist. Please stop.

  36. Allan Miller: Nonlin.org: I may be wrong, but thought LTEE was designed to prove evolution.

    No, to investigate evolution.

    Like Miller–Urey and more.

Wrong again. Miller-Urey was looking at prebiotic organic synthesis. The failure to understand the distinction between origins and evolution is endemic among critics.

Sure. That’s why he called it LTEE with E for “evolution”? Who are you fooling?
“Origins” (abiogenesis) is a prerequisite of “evolution”. Hence the link.

newton: How is the long term experiment in Design going, any new designs detected?

Proof of design was provided: http://theskepticalzone.com/wp/intelligent-design-detection/ … and it’s still standing.

OMagain: You personally are willing to do exactly that, but science takes the place of politics.

Let’s be clear again and again: “evolution” is NOT science.

OMagain: You know that your ‘critiques’ of the very concept of fitness are themselves absurd

Prove it. I for one have proved “fitness” to be absurd.

phoodoo: I didn’t first have a belief and then found evidence to reinforce it.

Same here. Isn’t this amazing? How much we can disagree on some thing and agree on others?

OMagain: The people who dispute that evolution happens are outside of the mainstream and do not actually contribute to science per se. They piss around on blogs whining and moaning but not actually moving the needle a jot.

The beauty is that “evolution” is completely ignored in science… as it should be. Take coronavirus for instance – the basis of this thread.

  37. Nonlin.org: You’re serious?!? Whoever thinks Trump is dumb, he is the dumbest of them all. Wow!

I know you like to deny obvious stuff, but this takes the biscuit.

  38. Nonlin.org: Sure. That’s why he called it LTEE with E for “evolution”? Who are you fooling?

I was talking about Miller-Urey. They never included ‘E’ for Evolution. I’m not disputing that the LTEE was an investigation of evolution, am I?

“Origins” (abiogenesis) is a prerequisite of “evolution”. Hence the link.

Evolution could proceed with synthetic organisms, so no, still wrong. Like saying you can’t do comparative linguistics without considering the origin of language.

  39. Nonlin.org: Prove it. I for one have proved “fitness” to be absurd.

Publish or perish. If you have indeed proven it you have nothing to fear and only adulation awaits.

  40. Corneel: I know you like to deny obvious stuff, but this takes the biscuit.
