Moderation Issues (6)

Please use this thread for (and only for) alerting admins to moderation issues and for raising complaints arising from particular decisions. We remind participants that TSZ is a benign dictatorship, the property of Dr. Elizabeth Liddle. All decisions regarding policy and implementation are hers alone.

  1. My opinion of this site has been shattered. Elizabeth Liddle would be ashamed

I am an admin. Yet I cannot even post any new article.

  2. I’m getting a (thoroughly useless!) WordPress error when accessing via the Samsung Internet browser on my tablet. “There has been a critical error on your website”. That’s some top-flight diagnostics, right there!

Firefox is OK. Nothing further to offer, I’m afraid – the problem may actually reside in the browser, not WP or the site.

  3. Allan Miller,

I’m not seeing problems with “firefox” or with “konqueror” (chromium based).

When I login, it does tell me that the login page is insecure. Perhaps the samsung browser is objecting to that.

Yet you acted like a child & refused to be an admin or anything official at TSZ anymore after your ill-judged making of a yahoo an “author” here. Even after I and a couple of others batted for you, the response was pathetic and self-loathing! You wouldn’t deign to allow yourself to be “reinstated” after being “insulted” & instead pouted with wounded pride that that that ship had sailed. Such a poor reflection both on IDism & the “cynical religion” you’ve been pushing & promoting at TSZ for bouts of many months.

There’s a better way forward, which is to drop IDism entirely and altogether. How about it, Mung, Amen?

I can’t agree to align myself with your lies.

Cheers, yes, Firefox is OK. Unfortunately, it’s a terrible browser on a tablet! Used to be my favourite, but they’ve faffed it beyond usefulness now, for me.

In a recent blog post, Jeb Fosler writes about a incident written by Fred Bledsoe about the former director of the National Center for Science Education’s, Eugenie Scott, attending WonderCon in Anaheim California. According to an associate of Bledsoe’s it appeared Scott had had a few too many White Russians, and she began suggesting that perhaps honey bees could be trained to use as weapons against creationists and other religious groups, who attend seminars.

Fosler writes Bledsoe stated that a collegue overheard Scott cackling madly whilst suggesting that if you took some common honey bees, and bred them with some aggressive Africanized bees, you could them train them to recognize the scents of frankincense and myrrh, and spikenard, which she said is one good way to recognize religious leanings, as well as some brands of soap. The bees wouldn’t need to kill anyone, they would just sting noses, and earlobes and other visible areas, and then those victims would be easily recognizable and they could then be targeted for other ridicule while they are shopping or at Starbucks.

Also she mentioned that her daughter once thought of joining an Ashram in New York, and that if she ever did that, she would personally hire someone to

I didn’t post this then remove it, so who did?

  8. phoodoo,

A couple of my old drafts appeared today too, with a Private: prefix. I don’t think anyone else can see them.

  9. Allan Miller,

Here is the really weird part-I don’t even remember drafting that, but now that I read it it sure is funny, I wonder why I didn’t post it?

Yeah, my unseen posts were some of my best work too …

  11. phoodoo,

It seems that a bunch of draft posts were moved to published private posts. But I think you can only see the ones that you authored. As an admin, I can see all 91 of them. And they all have today’s date, which is annoying since they were old drafts.

I don’t know what happened. Perhaps Alan knows. It may be due to a software update, but that’s just a wild guess.

  12. Neil Rickert,

An old glitch has reappeared too – editing a comment causes it to disappear. The warning this might happen (which I should have spotted) is when you get the opportunity to edit more than just the text.

  13. Allan Miller,
Yes that was me, thinking I could clear old draft posts to the “private” folder, not realising they would appear visible to authors and admins. Apologies for the inconvenience.

  14. Allan Miller,
Have reinstalled the plugin and it seems to be working OK for my sock. There was an update for WordPress a few days ago so that may have affected things.

  15. Hi Alan, I’ve attached the screenshot I mentioned below.

I’ve lived with it for a good while now and it hasn’t caused me much of a problem but if there is an easy fix I’d appreciate it being resolved.

  16. I have a bit of a problem when posting comments. There is an “upload file” banner obscuring the edit box above the comments box on my page.

Yes, I see that too. But I’m not sure why you see it as a problem. Can’t you just ignore it?

What I call “edit box” is what you are calling “comments box”.

What is obscured by that banner appears to just be an “upload” button. And since you just uploaded an image, I don’t see that as causing you a problem.

To illustrate what Alan was suggesting, I used italics for quoting you in this reply. To use italics, I just did <em> — text to quote — </em>

  17. CharlieM,
Like Neil, I’m not sure what your problem is. Yes, the layout is a bit messy but the button functions.

You mention editing but my suggestion was something to bear in mind for future comments. HTML tags are enabled so you can use “em” and “i” (displays as italic) “strong” displays as bold type. I’m sure there’s a list somewhere. “a href=”link” is about the only other one I use.

    PS @ Neil

How do you display arrows in text without them behaving as tags?

  18. Alan Fox: How do you display arrows in text without them behaving as tags?

I think you are asking how I did <em>

    For that, I used &lt;em&gt;

And if you want to know how I did that — go to the comments page, and use “Quick Edit” to see the source. (Sorry, I think only moderators can do that).

  19. Here is a list of the specific HTML tags that WordPress allows

address, a, abbr, acronym, area, article, aside, b, big, blockquote, br, caption, cite, class, code, col, del, details, dd, div, dl, dt, em, figure, figcaption, footer, font, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, header, hgroup, hr, i, img, ins, kbd, li, map, ol, p, pre, q, s, section, small, span, strike, strong, sub, summary, sup, table, tbody, td, tfoot, th, thead, tr, tt, u, ul, var

  20. Alan Fox: CharlieM,
Like Neil, I’m not sure what your problem is. Yes, the layout is a bit messy but the button functions.

Well, like I said, it’s not much of a problem. To me it looked as if the rectangle I was pointing to was obscuring a box and I thought that the box might contain other tools apart from the “upload file” button. I didn’t realise that it looked this way for everyone.

You mention editing but my suggestion was something to bear in mind for future comments. HTML tags are enabled so you can use “em” and “i” (displays as italic) “strong” displays as bold type. I’m sure there’s a list somewhere. “a href=”link” is about the only other one I use

Yes, I just thought I’d mention it while we were on the subject of formatting comments. For instance I though there might have been an “insert page break” button or similar hidden under the “upload file” rectangle.

Thanks for providing the list of tags. I’ll save them should I ever need them.

  21. DNA_Jock,

I realize I have insulted people in the past. I have certainly given you a bad time in a few instances and I apologize for that. I have found some of your comments very insightful. One in particular was regarding the gene database immaturity.

  22. colewd,

What I wonder about, Bill, is this: why do you complain about Nonlin reaping what (s)he sowed, yet you don’t complain about Nonlin insulting people who have done nothing wrong, except, perhaps, trying to explain things to her/him?

  23. Entropy,

My comment had nothing to do with nonlinear. It was directed toward Alan’s comment that people should be treated differently depending on their status.

Nonlinear does not try to engage in conversations and so he is not a good example of a solid contributor based on the norms Elizebeth set up.

  24. colewd:

While it’s refreshing that you see the problem with Nonlin, I doubt that was Alan’s point. Joe has been respectful to anybody he’s interacted with. Nonlin responded with insults (not for the first time, not only to Joe). I gave Nonlin just a tiny bit of what (s)he has given everyone else, only I wasn’t precisely subtle. Alan didn’t say it was right of me to do that, but let’s assume he did. I don’t see how that would mean it’s right to insult anybody depending on their status, when the problem has been, clearly, Nonlin’s attitude, not her/his status.

  25. colewd:

What I said was :My personal view is that an argument is weakened if it relies on insulting your opponent.

Nonlinear does not try to engage in conversations and so he is not a good example of a solid contributor based on the norms Elizabeth set up.

I agree. Lizzie set a bar that was impossibly high for most of us: to engage honestly and openly in dialogue. I think it is an ideal that is noble but unsustainable for any length of time for me and, I suspect, others. TSZ relies on a critical mass of participants that see value in Lizzie’s aims. Maybe the decline of the ID movement and the decline of the blogosphere as a platform for ideas means we all need to consider other hobbies.

  26. Entropy: Alan didn’t say it was right of me to do that, but let’s assume he did.

I’m not a binarist. There’s no “right”, only degrees of accuracy. And value is important. There’s value in information. The value of the internet is also in its anarchy. Yet that anarchy allows inaccurate nonsense: white supremacy, anti-vaxxers, the Qanon movement for examples, a platform. I’d like it if all comments posted here (as many shining examples are) were as accurate as possible. It is a bonus when they are also witty, innovative, challenging. I don’t want to be a censor; I want to be a facilitator of communication of information that is accurate and to be an antidote to conspracy nonsense. The key is to encourage everyone to exazmine their own prejudices but I’m not sure I can fulfill my own aspirations.

  27. Alan Fox: Lizzie set a bar that was impossibly high for most of us: to engage honestly and openly in dialogue.

Thankfully, the bar Elizabeth set for removing an admin was much lower. You had no problem meeting it.

The idea that I was going to take over this site is ludicrous on it’s face. It has no evidence at all to support it.

You’ve no platform on which to preach to others Alan. Your failure to correct past wrongs places you in a company which you rather obviously feel entirely comfortable with.

  28. I don’t know how this works, and I understand this is a weekend, but I left a potential OP, my first, well, wherever it is. I cannot get rid of the “pending block editor” thing, which means that might be pending review / approval.

    Happy weekend everybody!

  29. Alan Fox: There was an ongoing discussion from which you withdrew.

There was an “ongoing discussion” to which I was not invited.

  30. phoodoo:
    Alan Fox,
It shouldn’t require a private message Alan. This is an open forum, not your fiefdom.

Nothing preventing Mung sharing the contents with you, everyone at TSZ, or the whole world if he wants.

  31. Alan Fox: Nothing preventing Mung sharing the contents with you, everyone at TSZ, or the whole world if he wants.

This is true. I chose to not share certain conversations. You’re suggesting that
I should have made all our private conversations public? DNA_Jock might not like that. 🙂

  32. Mung: You’re suggesting that
I should have made all our private conversations public?

No, clearly he was referring to a specific message, were it to be sent.

What an attention whore you are.

Allan Miller: I think you may be overstretching the analogy a tad.

I think this is beyond your intelect.

Allan Miller: OK sir, all done sir, the floor is yours.

    OK. Ask your questions.

OMagain: Can you name something that the previous model explains that evolution cannot?

The appearance and fact of design. The unity of life. The universal laws. EVERYTHING. What a stupid question! And the others are far worse.

Allan Miller: This OP (the fridge-o-matic-challenge) was a bad, indefensible idea.

You really believe this, or you’re just saying? Either way you’re fucked. Wow!

According to the standards of the site, that you yourself have corrupted, there is nothing against the rules in this post. You are just being a fuckhead again Alan.

  34. phoodoo writes (on the wrong thread, mind you)

Saying something is beyond someone’s intellect has been allowed here IN TONS,

We have been rather lenient around here lately, but I have a suspicion that phoodoo may have missed a subtlety here: could you provide links to, say, five examples?
    Thanks.

  35. phoodoo: According to the standards of the site, that you yourself have corrupted, there is nothing against the rules in this post.

    This line :
I think this is beyond your intelect(sic).

is a clear breach of the rule:

Address the content of the post, not the perceived failings of the poster. [purple text added 28th November 2015]
This means that accusing others of ignorance or stupidity is off topic
As is implying that other posters are mentally ill or demented.

But the issue is stochastic. In giving leeway to nonlin, perhaps admins have become a little too relaxed with the “posting-in-good-faith” rule. I will try and be more vigilant.

  36. DNA_Jock: …could you provide links to, say, five examples?

Oh please. To what end may I ask? Will it put a stop to it?

Why would you even propose that only five examples be provided? Do you seriously believe that five examples could not be found? No, you can’t be that dumb. 😉
