  1. Mung,

I’m not seeing it either. How can not commenting be considered trolling? Is not collecting stamps a hobby? As Jock says, no rule against trolling here, per se. You’d need to have some sort of coherent definition first.

  2. i know this is about moderation only but i’ll cheat. Anyone know what happened to Pandas Thumb blog? When i try to get into it or anything on the internet i just get no answr like its struggling to find it. I don’t think I’ve been bsnned and anyways why would it look this way . its weird. i have a good enough computer. Have they admitted defeat and retired back to thier farms??

  3. www2.pandasthumb.org

was showing a “down for maintenance” message but that is down at the moment.

    ETA back up.

  4. That other post in Sandbox wasn’t about moderation, so it is now moved there.

  5. Gregory: That’s KN’s political-economic “philosophical” packaged deal that he delivers to undergrad students with apparent “post-modern” impunity.

I am usually content to ignore Gregory’s unrelenting vile invective against me, but this crosses a line: he is now saying things about my non-Internet life, my real life — that is, my teaching — that are both baseless and false. He has no evidence for what it is that I teach or how I teach it, nor could he — and he is saying things that are false and without evidence.

I request a response from the Moderators with regard to this behavior.

Another reason to go ahead with that post about the Frankfurt school of thought: getting Greg triggered.

You forget that Gregory is a mind-reader, so he knows all about you KN.

    ok, i’ve responded. 🙂

  8. Is anyone having difficulty accessing the site currently? Vincent Torley reports he is getting the following message:

“This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app, or if one is already installed, please create an association in the Default Apps Settings page.”

If anyone as any helpful suggestions, I’ll pass them on to Vincent. Searching using the text indicates it is a well-known Windows 10 issue.

  9. I am having problems posting also. I wrote a post about movies the other day and today talked about the joys of tennis and my posts mysteriously disappeared.

  10. Alan Fox,

Guano, what? Why would a post about tennis be in guano? Is there some kind of bug with the system?

Anyway, if the bug is fixed, can you put it back where it belongs, or should I just repost? Are you a tennis fan Alan?

  11. Dear moderators,
FYI: I am getting increased incidence of “Error establishing a database connection” errors.

    Alan Fox,

People can’t look at a boning knife and see it’s purpose??

This post does not break any rules whatsoever.

You wanted examples of design detection. This is an example.

Flagrant disregard of the rules by the moderators here is a sign that you are losing the debate. I realize the moderators and the owner of this site were unable to follow the rules at UD, but how is it that they are unable to even follow the rules at their own site?

  13. phoodoo,

You know full well what the issue is as I’ve informed you by PM. Stalking allegations alluding to tennis, boning knives will move to guano.

  14. Alan Fox,

There were no allegations-you are making that up.

I said a boning knife is an example of something that can be detected as design. That was all that was said. The post is right there. There are no allegations in that post at all.

So again, you are making things up.

  15. phoodoo,
    Suggestions:
1 take a hint and think of some other man-made object that supports the idea that “Design” can be detected.
    2 don’t.

There is a rule that says you get to decide what examples I prefer?

Is this the same way you were unable to follow the rules at UD?

So stop trying to establish a database connection!

    Duh.

    😉

  18. Thanks to Allan Miller for spotting and pointing out a bug in comment editing. I just verified that, using the Ajax editor, on saving an edit the comment is lost completely. Admins get to use the post editor, so we weren’t aware of the problem. While I’m looking for a fix, it might be safest to switch off the comment editor for now. Has anyone else had problems?

It’s better than comment loss, but I’m a bugger for fiddling post-edit! Main usage for me is adding the page # to linked ‘previous’ comments, but it wouldn’t kill me to get it right first time!

  20. Deleted and re-downloaded edit plugin. Changed a few settings and seems to work when I try editing. Didn’t lose the comment. Anyone want to try editing a comment, I suggest trying a test or copy/save first.

  21. Looks like the edit pluggin is set to block edits to posts unless it’s the last post in the thread. Is that intentional?

  22. dazz,
I reloaded the plugin and it may be it is a default option. I’ll check and change if so. Thanks for letting me know.

  23. Dear admins/moderators:

I object to allowing the use of this site by the Chinese to attempt to influence the upcoming U.S. elections.

  24. I’ve just had the plus sign disappear from a comment. Does it appear between the following quotation marks? ” ”

Entering Unicode instead: ” ” ETA: Well, hell. What I entered was “2 2 = 4,” and I subsequently edited the comment. Perhaps the editor did something. Another edit: Yes, the editor is removing the plus sign. Here I reenter the plus sign in the editor, ” ,” and the Unicode for the plus sign: “+”

  25. Ah, I can’t. Is that the glitch? (ETA2 admins can’t edit using the blue edit button below left of comments but other members can)

ETA that’s odd. Seems the plus sign is stripped out by the editor. Are any other characters affected? Just tried all numerals and common operators and only the plus sign disappeared.

  26. Alan Fox: admins can’t edit using the blue edit button below left of comments but other members can

I first encountered the problem editing a comment on a thread I created, without using the blue edit button, and then reproduced it here, using the blue edit button. I’m not clear on the changes you’ve made recently, but the editors used to be different in those two cases.

  27. Neil Rickert,

“Quick edit” isn’t one of my options. When I edit as creator of a thread, the editor identifies itself as “Comment Editor.” I googled for information on what’s happening, but got a bunch of irrelevant hits, and didn’t care to work through them. At the moment, I can’t think of a good search term.

  28. Tom English: I googled for information on what’s happening, but got a bunch of irrelevant hits, and didn’t care to work through them. At the moment, I can’t think of a good search term.

Had the same experience. Doesn’t seem that it’s a common problem, though the edit plugin was playing up before. I’ll have a play with the settings when I get chance.

  29. We have a server problem.

I can’t access the storage database for opening posts (500 error). Result is I cannot approve pending posts. I’ll need to contact the site owner as I suspect it is due hitting a limit on database size.

ETA are fellow admins seeing the same problem?

ETA2 Seems I can get to the database by pasting in the URL and refreshing a number of times. Same issue using alternatives to Chrome (Firefox, Vivaldi and Edge). Did think it might be a bandwidth issue as I only get up to 1 Mb per second on wired internet but using mobile as a hotspot I’m currently getting 50+Mb per sec and I have the same problem. Anyway, it’s not fatal so I’ll stop worrying that it’s an indicator of impending doom.
