Disagree. I think the majority of commenters and the majority of comments are perfectly civil. As I’ve remarked before there are also one or two button-pushers and some reasonable commenters who react to having their buttons pushed. It’s a learning curve for everyone but I think somehow effective dialogue happens.

Well, admins aren’t perfect. I’d prefer to retry the idea of flagging comments so admins could be reactive rather than proactive. But I support Lizzie in her ideals and it is up to her how to run this website.

In general conversation, it’s usually permissible to call oneself names (or apply belittling descriptions) that others should not emulate or copy. Quite often, the meanings are opposites. In this case, Joe F’s usage of “geek” to describe himself means he’s a specialist, while someone else calling him a geek means he’s a narrow-minded ignoramus. Motivation and intent matter.

I object to Sal’s claim of being an ID’ist.
Sal doesn’t know what he is. If his claim is allowed to stand, I will claim to be an evolutionist. Then next time someone says I don’t know what I am talking about, I can say, well, then maybe evolutionists are idiots.
That works for some people (like Frankie) who are always insulting others. By placing him on the ignore list, you are not missing anything meaningful. But others provide very informative comments and then, on occasion, slip into insult mode on occasion. I would classify you and others (including myself) in that category. By blocking everyone who ever insulted someone would make for a very strange and truncated conversation.
Then there are those who use the Ignore commenter button to avoid having to respond to comments that they don’t have the answer to. This is just childish but, thankfully, I am only aware of one person who comments here who is that childish.

Mung being and ambassador for ID doesn’t necessarily do the ID case much favors.
Gregory being an ambassador for Theism doen’t make a good case for theism.
Phoodoo and Frankie, about the same can be said. Guanoing what they say, demoting Mung — I don’t see those actions as being anti-ID, that helps ID look less bad — less like Mung, Phoodoo, Gregory, and Frankie.
I teach ID students, I wouldn’t want them to have a bad impression about ID by reading the offerings of Phoodoo, Gregory and Frankie.

Adapa’s comment skirts the line but doesn’t seem to explicitly violate any of the rules. I would not have Guano’d it either, regardless of who wrote it.
The same is true of Richard’s first comment.
Richard’s second comment doesn’t even come close to violating any rule.
If you disagree, please make your case with reference to the specific rules you think were broken.
