Moderation Issues (6)

  1. BruceS:
Have the moderators considered if the rule about not accusing others of misleading applies to a couple of Tom’s latest posts?

I enjoy the mathematical elements of the exchange between Eric and Tom, and I would like to see both feel that the can continue it here.

Oh, I don’t think you need to worry about this. If you have noticed, the rules don’t apply equally to all sides of the theist/nontheist divide here (obviously).

In fact, I am guessing that there is perhaps zero posts from atheists-skeptics here, which have been called out for violating that rule, it just doesn’t happen. Now of course the skeptics violate that rule every day here. But them actually getting reprimanded for that? Ha! We all know the Alan-Jock-Neil triumvirate doesn’t work that way.

They employ a special breed of censorship here. They will just claim it contains content, so doesn’t count. Or they didn’t notice it. Or they are justified in their frustrations, because you know, they are sensitive skeptics and all… You name it, the triumvirate has an excuse ready.

  2. Joe Felsenstein:
My ability to post comments has returned, and I assume others’ too.I knew Alan Fox’s email and complained to him.He seems to have fixed it.

I just reinstalled the WordPress software as the first and easiest thing to try. It appears to have worked but I don’t know what triggered the problem. Nothing has changed recently – no new plugins for instance. I get the impression this new “critical error” thingie was intended as a feature but has been a bit of a bug.

  3. Neil Rickert: I just tried to send you a test message. And it looks as if something is broken.

Yes, it looks as though something is broken. Normally, when you start entering a name, a menu of possible completions pops up. That’s not happening now. Wild guess: In the reinstallation of WordPress, Alan did not enable PMs.

  4. Tom English,
That’s possible. PMs were working on the 10th Dec when I exchanged messages with dazz regarding the comment problem and now they’re not. Will have a look.

  5. Seems to work between me and my sock. There is a minimum character length for message title and content (5 and 10 characters respectively). I’ve messaged Tom and if anyone else wants to check by sending a test message that would be helpful.

PS as Tom points out, you can’t just enter the recipient’s name. As you type, you are offered choice of registered member names and you highlight who you wish to send to.

  6. I did receive the test announcement. I’m not sure how to reply to it as a message.

I too have had trouble sending messages in the past few weeks: I could not enter a successful To field, even To myself as BruceS. Has something been fixed with messages in the past few days? Should I try again to send one as a test?

  7. Alan Fox: PS as Tom points out, you can’t just enter the recipient’s name.

That does not happen when I try messages any more, although it used to when I could send messages.

I type lots of text in subject and message fields. But no matter how much of BruceS or Alan Fox I type, no drop down list appears.

Is there something special about eg my profile?

  8. Odd. The dropdown (and everything else) work in both directions between me and my sock. The dropdown is a bit annoying as it partly hides behind the comment box if there are more than three choices.

  9. Alan Fox:

I don’t see any drop down. In any event, it’s not that important so don’t worry about it.

  10. Alan Fox: The dropdown (and everything else) work in both directions between me and my sock.

    There’s no dropdown here.

So I type in the full recipient name (in this case “Alan Fox” (without the quotes).

I click “Send”. As best I can tell, no message is sent. And the screen tells me “Recipient required”. It looks as if it ignores what I type in as recipient name.

  11. How odd. I got messages from Tom and Bruce but when sending acknowledgements my browser, Chrome, crashed. In Firefox, things seem to work.

  12. Guys, I.m open to suggestions. I’m tempted to delete and reinstall the plugin as the message database can be retained and should be accessible to the new installation. The trouble is I’m still not clear what the issues are.

  13. Alan Fox: Guys, I.m open to suggestions.

I was inclined to say that it had something to do with security settings. It looked like administrator “Alan Fox” had access to the list of user names, while less-privileged users did not. But then you said that your sock could send a PM to user “Alan Fox.” That would shoot down my guess, assuming that you haven’t granted your alternative account special privileges.

  14. Was getting a 405 error and unable to access TSZ so have disabled the message system for now. I think it’s better that the site works without it until we find the bug.

  15. Tom English,

It has/had “new author” status when checking PM function. I’m sure PMs software has the glitch as it works with the main display. A previous glitch in the plugin took the site down. Messages are saved in a separate database so any data could still be recovered. Plan B would be trying another plugin though there isn’t much choice.

  16. Not sure what has happened to Messages. I know Alan has been mucking around with it. Leaving well enough alone isn’t really his thing.

  17. walto:

No mucking about. The choice was have the PM plugin running and let TSZ crash or switch it off until there’s a fix. I went with option 2. There is no “leave well alone” option. If you are curious, there are comments prior to yours discussing the issue.

  18. I’ve restored the PM system. I’ve not found the bug that prevents the dropdown user selection from working but you should be able to send a message by clicking on “Directory” and selecting your recipient.

  19. DNA_Jock,

Consistently anti-science, consistently pandering to his religious audience, and consistently wrong.

This is Adapta’s post a Peaceful Science. He often makes the claim that ID is anti science.

  20. colewd: “Consistently anti-science, consistently pandering to his religious audience, and consistently wrong.”

This is Adapta’s post a Peaceful Science. He often makes the claim that ID is anti science

Note that description by me is specifically referring to Michael Behe’s popular press garbage books.

ID is anti-science Bill. I explained why too

“Because it has no physical mechanisms, has no testable hypotheses, makes no predictions, and can’t be falsified. Same as the last 500 times you asked and were answered.”

You claimed all those items were false yet when I asked to provide things on the list you lied and ran away. Again.

  21. Adapa,

You claimed all those items were false yet when I asked to provide things on the list you lied and ran away. Again.

There is no reason to follow your dishonest misrepresentations. Falsifying straw-man arguments is not a big challenge. Why don’t you ask yourself why you are forced to change the design argument in order to challenge it. Again, Merry Christmas Tim.

  22. colewd: There is no reason to follow your dishonest misrepresentations.

Bill lies and runs from the questions again

Please provide ID’s physical mechanisms. testable hypotheses, predictions which arise from ID’s tenets, and method of falsification.

Bill will now lie and claim he already answered them, he just can’t say where. 🙂

Why don’t you ask yourself why you are forced to blatantly lie about everything in evolutionary science in order to challenge it.

  23. Adapa,

I’l ask again: if the mind you speak of is not disembodied then what body does it reside in and how was that determined?

What does gravity look like Tim? Please make a scientific argument that supports that your questions have any relevance to whether there is a valid scientific design argument. Lets see if you can do this without invoking logical fallacies. If you can I will answer you.

  24. The Noyau thread is underused. It’s feeling lonely. What about a flamefest to celebrate the winter solstice!

  25. colewd: What does gravity look like Tim?

You dodged the question again Bill. Grow a spine and try to answer.

If the mind you speak of is not disembodied then what body does it reside in and how was that determined?

  26. Adapa,

If the mind you speak of is not disembodied then what body does it reside in and how was that determined?

What does gravity look like Tim? You have not validated that an answer to your question is required for ID to be science. Grow a spine Tim and make a real argument for once.

  27. colewd: What does gravity look like Tim?

You dodged the question AGAIN Bill:

If the mind you speak of is not disembodied then what body does it reside in and how was that determined?

You have not validated that an answer to your question is required for ID to be science

Another dishonest evasion by Bill. The question of where your magic designer’s “mind” physically resides has nothing to do with the points raised for why ID isn’t scientific.

Do you think you honor your God by constantly lying in His name?

  28. colewd:
    Adapa,

You just can’t help yourself can you.

You just can’t help being dishonest can you? Any lie told for Jesus is a good lie, right Bill?

Oh, and you still dodged the question:

If the mind you speak of is not disembodied then what body does it reside in and how was that determined?

  29. I stopped by here and was told I have 6 unread messages, but I can’t get to any unread messages. My inbox only seems to have old ones.

Are there over 50 messages in the Inbox?

  31. petrushka:
I have messages but can’t post responses.

There is a glitch in that entering recipient via the drop down doesn’t work (though it does for me on an android phone) but you can use the “directory” button and select a recipient. I’m in touch with the plug in author but we’re both a bit time-poor at the moment.
