World Press Photo of the Year 2026

American photographer Carol Suzy won the 2026 World Press Photo Contest. The winning image shows girls desperately holding on to their father, a migrant from Ecuador, while agents of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest him following a hearing over his immigration status in New York.

    Liam Conejo Arias, the 5-year-old detained by ICE while returning home from school with his father. They were sent to a detention center in Texas. A judge eventually ordered their release. In his ruling, the judge wrote:

    The case has its genesis in the ill-conceived and incompetently implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas, apparently even if it requires traumatizing children…

    Observing human behaviour confirms that for some among us, the perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency.

  2. Upon re-reading I noticed that I managed to mangle the winner’s name. Her name is Carol Guzy. It is correct in the image credit.
