Moderation Issues (5)

Please use this thread for (and only for) alerting admins to moderation issues and for raising complaints arising from particular decisions. We remind participants that TSZ is a benign dictatorship, the property of Dr. Elizabeth Liddle. All decisions regarding policy and implementation are hers alone.

  1. J-Mac: with the exception of me and Robert Byers…

And Gregory. When they started censoring his posts he left. So in effect they banned him.

  2. Joe Felsenstein: The Fisher Memorial Lecture one is just cluttering up the front page at this point.

And has been for weeks. It served it’s “soft censorship” purpose well.

I can’t wait to see one of J-Mac’s OPs kept up to keep OPs like Glen’s “below the fold,” so to speak.

  3. Mung: And has been for weeks. It served it’s “soft censorship” purpose well.

    Hey! I promised you a special OP, didn’t I??? 😉

What J-Mac or Byers post do you think ought to be “stuck”?

  5. walto: What J-Mac or Byers post do you think ought to be “stuck”?

I’m against it but mung simply stated his opinion. It’s all subjective…
I like chocolate ice-cream… you may like just the cone…

  6. walto: What J-Mac or Byers post do you think ought to be “stuck”?

Did you mean to ask where they ought to be stuck?

  7. Mung: And has been for weeks. It served it’s “soft censorship” purpose well.

I always read latest comments, what is stuck to the front is irrelevant.

  8. Tom English:
OK, who put f*cking in the spam filter?

Would an admin please move my “naughty” comment into Joe’s thread?

Your comment is fun bloody-tactic… nutty as well …

  9. dazz: You are too stupid to notice…

Pretty sure that calling people stupid is against the rules.

Address the content of the post, not the perceived failings of the poster. [purple text added 28th November 2015]

This means that accusing others of ignorance or stupidity is off topic

  10. Mung: This means that accusing others of ignorance or stupidity is off topic

It’s not an accusation. It’s a fact. A fact demonstrated by you. To deny the obvious truth of your selective stupidity would be itself a lie.

  11. OMagain: Mental illness.

Pretty sure that accusing people of being mentally ill is against the rules.

As is implying that other posters are mentally ill or demented.

  12. Just submitted a new OP. I hope this one will tick off some of so-called “true Christians at UD…

    I guess OMgun is a psychiatrists or a psychologist…
It’s funny that doctors often can’t see their own disorders not to mention treating themselves…

  14. Mods, Bryan Ehlmann, the guy who wrote the stuff on the natural afterlife that I quoted in my recent OP has registered so he can reply on that thread. He’s had a ton of trouble doing so–most recently getting the response that his comment has been marked as spam.

Can one of you folks assist, please? Thankee.

  15. Neil Rickert,

I am a new user as walto has indicated. I am still having a few problems. How do I upload a .pdf file? I click on the Upload button and select and Open the file in the file dialog box that pops up. But then nothing happens.

I have a table that I would like to show as a comment, but when I just enter it as text with all of the proper spacing, it really gets messed up in the final formatting, which is why I would like to enter it as a .pdf.

  16. I’m not sure what happened to the pdf file. It probably uploaded but I am not seeing it.

To just enter data in tables, use:

    <pre>

    put the columns here

    </pre>

The “pre” tag preserves the format as entered. It might be best to format in a command line terminal (monospace text) before you enter it. The comment editor is not using monospace, so it might look messed up until you post.

You should change the format from PDF to an image format like JPG or PNG.

  18. Tom English,

Okay, I made the table a .jpg file. Did the the same thing as described above for the .pdf file and, again, when the file dialog box closes after selecting the file and pressing OPEN, nothing happens. The picture doesn’t appear and there’s no message.

  19. Hi Bryon,

You browser should display a bar along the top and in the upper left you should see “The Skeptical Zone” next to the wordpress logo. If you hover over that you should see “Dashboard.” Click that and that brings up a menu. Choose Media then Add New.

You can then drag and drop your file. Then you can embed a link to it as an image in your post. Let us know if you need help with how to do that.

  20. Mung,

See no Media selection. See Post, then hover over it and see Add New. But when I click on that, do not see Media. See Image. Tried it and got no file dialog box to upload jpg file.

Do I need to create a Post to upload my jpg file? It seems the only way to get some editing is with a Post, not with Comments.

    Help!

    Help!

You can highlight the text, copy and paste it in… It’s just easier and you don’t have post the whole document few will read…

Alternatively you can wait a few thousand years for a beneficial mutation in the wordpress program code…

  22. Bryon:

    See no Media selection.

It’s in black, on the left, after you hover over ‘The Skeptical Zone’ and click on ‘Dashboard’:

  23. keiths,

I know you must think I’m blind, but I have no Media selection. Under Dashboard I just have Posts, Comments, Profile, and Tools.

I would love to include here a screenshot, as you did, to prove it, but I don’t know how to do this!

Btw, I’m a retired Computer Science Professor would taught courses in Human-Computer Interaction and developing user-friendly interfaces, which unfortunately makes me very frustrated when I’m using interfaces and can’t figure out how to do something I believe should be easy to do.

  24. Bryon,

    I believe you.

I suspect it has something to do with what’s known in WordPress as your “user role”. Since you’re a new member, your user role is probably the default, with restricted permissions.

Mods, could you check Bryon’s user role?

  25. Bryon,

I know you must think I’m blind, but I have no Media selection. Under Dashboard I just have Posts, Comments, Profile, and Tools.

So do I. I just down loaded the latest Apple OS and I still don’t see media.

  26. In “Leave a Reply” does the button “Upload file: (Allowed file types: jpg, gif, png, pdf, mp3, maximum file size: 200MB” just above this text box simply not work?

If it doesn’t, why is it here. If it is working, what the heck is supposed to happen after I click it, select my file in the file dialog box, and click Open? The file dialog box disappears, but I get no message and nothing seems to happen. Was the file uploaded? If so, where?

There’s an upper limit on file size of 200 MB and PDF is an accepted format. Is it possible the file you are attempting to upload is larger?

  28. colewd:
    Alan Fox,

Why are we missing the media tab when we go into the dashboard?

Because “contributor” status didn’t allow access to the media files. Nor did it allow contributors to upload files. It does now.

  29. Bryon:
    Alan Fox,

Not even close. Much less than 1 MB.

It will work now for you. The default rôle for new members is “contributor” which did not include permission to upload files. It does now. Apologies for the frustration.

  30. Bryon,
Just tell us what you want to tell us and move on!
This blog is not going to make your books sales go down…If there were any real people here, they’d hate to read…it ‘s fact..

  31. Alan Fox,

Thank you Alan! I believe I now have the table included in the comment. Although, I don’t know whether my table, which is given at the bottom of my comment, was placed there only because I included a link to it (uploaded via the Media button, now visible) in the text of my comment or because I had previously clicked on the “Upload file” button under Leave a Reply.

  32. New admins: we have several people ( we hope) who contribute NOTHING but attacks on others… I’m guilty of that too, however from time to time only, but there is a group of attackers that do ONLY that…

Just because TSZ is dying, shout those trolls be tolerated?

  33. Mods, Is it really OK with you for posters here to call other posters “despicable morons”? What the hell is your bar, exactly?

  34. walto:

It’s not slander if it’s true!

  35. walto,

Are you asking for a comment to be guano’ed, or are you merely complaining for the sake of it?
[this is not a rhetorical question]

  36. Kantian Naturalist: It’s not slander if it’s true!

Same applies to waldo calling others f…. and s….
The links are available upon request unless the defendant deems it inadmissible… Then I recommend to move to strike…

    walto,

[this is not a rhetorical question]

Why? Is the idea now that posts don’t get guanoed unless someone complains about them? (I believe that was one of the rule changes keiths was supporting.)

  38. walto: Why? Is the idea now that posts don’t get guanoed unless someone complains about them? (I believe that was one of the rule changes keiths was supporting.)

No, that’s not the rule, nor should it be, but it has been contributing factor #2 since you and I discussed this in 2015. Actually, my point was simply that if you want to see moderator action, you should let them know which aisle needs a clean-up…

  39. walto: Ah. I think it’s Charlie’s current masterpiece on how blood can think.

So now I have to ask it whether it want to be donated or not?

  40. walto,

Yeah, I figured that out for myself. He was rather vague about who might be despicable morons, and you came in a mite ‘hot’.

I’m having a hard time taking his ideas about blood’s motility seriously — I mean, it’s so obviously rubbish that it’s funny. He’s basing his case (in part) on the observation of microcirculation after LVMA is no longer detectable. He does realize, right, that these pigs DIE? And that failure to perfuse heart muscle also leads to ‘pump failure’ and DEATH. WTF?
Also, the bit about the valveless embryonic heart working as an impedance pump is quite the GSW to the foot for the whole “circulation is irreducibly complex” argument…
