Featured Thread

Featured threads ought to be featured because of their content, not because their content suppresses dissent.

The amazing sudden disappearance of the Feature posts here at TSZ is puzzling.

  1. Sudden disappearance! Evolution in reverse.

Current count of featured posts = ???

    Zero?

    Mung,

They didn’t disappear. They’re just not featured any more. 1984 all over again.

Pretty amazing that Mung can’t figure out the posts haven’t been removed, they’re just not stickied to the top as to give other posts a chance. The once featured posts are still active and still easily accessible from the links on the side bar.

ID-Creationists aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.

  3. Feature threads are no longer Feature threads. Let’s pretend that there were no Feature threads.

  4. Mung:

“Damn, the headlines of my yesterday’s paper aren’t the headlines today! WHAT THE HELL’S THE MATTER WITH THOSE DAMN PUBLISHERS!! Don’t they understand we old senile farts like CONSISTENCY??”

  5. Mung: Feature threads are no longer Feature threads.

    Correct.

Mung: Let’s pretend that there were no Feature threads.

    Why would we do that?

  6. Opening Posts are not an appropriate vehicle for raising moderation issues. There is already a thread for this purpose, here, entitled “moderation issues”.

I’d be obliged if commenters would refrain from further comments here and use the thread dedicated for that purpose.

ETA moved some comments to guano. The noyau thread is available for flaming.

  7. From a frequent visitor to TSZ, I think that I can answer Mung’s question. For several weeks I was opening TSZ site and seeing the same article at the top. I had (wrongfully) assumed that there had been no new OPs and moved along. I realize that this was due to my laziness, but most of my viewing is through a cell phone, and having to scroll down for a couple minutes overtime I want to see if there is a new OP can be annoying.

  8. “The amazing sudden disappearance of the Feature posts here at TSZ is puzzling.”

I would find a slow, fadeout sort of disappearance more puzzling and amazing. Maybe the letters going in alphabetical order?

  9. I was using sarcasm. Their sudden disappearance was exactly as puzzling as their sudden appearance. I don’t mind a Feature thread. What I question is a whole slew of them that appear at just the right time to force less savory topics out of sight.

  10. Mung: I was using sarcasm. Their sudden disappearance was exactly as puzzling as their sudden appearance.

I am not seeing anything puzzling about it.

Some threads were featured, because somebody was spamming the forum with content-free whining threads. When the situation changed such that there were several new threads with actual thoughtful discussion, that temporary featuring became unnecessary.

  11. I’m glad that we can all now admit to what actually happened. Perhaps there is yet hope.

  12. Mung,

I’m pretty sure Elizabeth was quite clear on why she marked some threads as feature. She didn’t say anything about unmarking them, but that seemed to follow from the reason that she originally featured posts.

  13. This entry was posted in 2nd Law of Thermodynamics by Mung.

What does the OP have to do with the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?

  14. stcordova: What does the OP have to do with the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?

There was a change in state. An increase in entropy. You just can’t escape the second law.

Someone had to violate the second law in order for all those featured posts to appear, and I figured their disappearance was just a return to normal. There wasn’t a category of diffusion of gasses so I thought second law was next best thing.
